What the terms mean

MCL, maximum contaminant level: the highest level allowed in drinking water.

MCLG, maximum contaminant level goal: the level below which there is no known or expected risk to health.

MRDL and MRDLG: the same limit and goal for a disinfectant such as chlorine.

Action level: the level that, if exceeded in more than 10 percent of homes tested, requires more treatment or other steps.

TT, treatment technique: a required process to reduce a contaminant. ppm and ppb: parts per million and parts per billion. NTU: a measure of cloudiness.

Important health information

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population: people with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, people who have had organ transplants, people with HIV or other immune system disorders, some elderly people and infants. They should ask their health care providers about drinking water.

Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water comes mainly from service lines and home plumbing. If water has been sitting for several hours, run the cold tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before drinking or cooking. The Safe Drinking Water Hotline is (800) 426-4791.
